Valley Stream, NY (November 10, 2009) – In the seventh district of the Nassau County Legislature, Republican challenger Howard Kopel unseated five-term Democratic incumbent Jeffrey Toback by more than 1,100 votes in a stunning upset that gives Nassau Republicans regained control of the county legislature for the first time in a decade. Kopel is an attorney and Chief Executive Officer of Sutton Alliance, one of the nation’s leading providers of commercial and residential real estate transaction services.
“I ran for office because I believe that I can provide a real contribution to the county legislature,” said Kopel. “My skills and experience as an executive responsible for profitability of a business with many employees and national reach will enable me to have a positive impact on the financial mess that has been perpetrated by a Democrat controlled legislature for the past decade. I look forward to representing all the people of the district, working with hopefully a new county executive and the legislature to reduce property taxes, reduce spending and cut the energy tax," said Kopel.
Honesty and fiscal fairness for the people has been one of the top goals driving Howard Kopel’s campaign and candidacy. Kopel is committed to solving Nassau County’s fiscal problems – but not on the backs of hardworking families and taxpayers. Kopel will repeal the new “Energy Tax” – a 2.5% mandatory surcharge on all forms of home heating energies which will provide direct relief to everyone in Nassau County who buys home heating fuels, resulting in tens of millions of dollars in savings.
As Chief Executive Officer, Kopel has overall responsibility for corporate policy and strategic planning for Sutton Alliance and its member companies: Sutton Land Title Agency, Progressive Closing & Escrow, and Sutton 1031 Exchange Services. The company’s corporate headquarters, with close to 100 employees, is based in Valley Stream, New York, with branch offices in Matawan, New Jersey and Port St. Lucie, Florida.
A member of the New York State Bar, Kopel graduated from Brooklyn Law School and received his undergraduate degree from Brooklyn College of the City University of New York. He is a trustee of the Valley Stream Chamber of Commerce and is active in his synagogue. He and his wife, Esther, have lived in Lawrence for 22 years and have four children and five grandchildren.
